When Joseph P. Liberati Intermediate School (JPLIS) in Center Valley, Pennsylvania launched a hands-on STEM challenge for its First Lego League team—aptly named the Ancient Pickles—they didn’t expect their classroom project to evolve into a fully functional structural prototype with real-world implications. Their mission: design a geodesic dome capable of protecting archaeologists working outdoors in all seasons.
To bring that idea to life, STEM coach Julianne Gallagher reached out to Americover requesting reinforced plastic sheeting samples in multiple thicknesses and UV-stabilized options. The students needed a material that was durable, weather-resistant, and strong enough to withstand wind, temperature swings, and extended outdoor exposure—conditions regularly faced by Pennsylvania archaeological teams.
Americover’s customer service representative, Lauren Hamilton, quickly prepared and shipped a curated selection of samples, including 6 mil and 10 mil reinforced films along with other options like SolaScrim. Each sample was clearly labeled, accompanied by product links, and shipped with a catalog so students could compare materials while researching dome design requirements.
As Julianne shared early on, “Our students will learn so much from your products, and we are thankful for your company and your generosity.”
Putting Materials to the Test
Over the following weeks, the Ancient Pickles evaluated each sample for flexibility, strength, durability, UV protection, and environmental resistance. They ran simple stress tests, simulated wind impact, and examined how the thickness and reinforcement patterns would affect performance if used as a protective structure at an active archaeological dig site.
After hands-on testing, the team identified two Americover materials as the best choices for their geodesic dome concept:
Using the 6 mil material as the exterior cover, the students built a scale geodesic dome model—complete with reinforced triangular geometry, tension points, and a functioning weather barrier. They proudly shared a photo of the finished prototype, demonstrating both their engineering problem-solving and the performance of the materials they tested.
The school has since requested budget estimates for 300 sq. ft. and 500 sq. ft. of each material so the students can formally present their design—and its material requirements—to the Pennsylvania Archaeological Society. Their work may soon transition from prototype to a real-world demonstration.
A Unique STEM Program Preparing Students for Real-World Innovation
Joseph P. Liberati Intermediate School serves gifted students with IQs of 130+ along with special-needs students, creating a collaborative environment where diverse thinkers tackle complex challenges together. Their First Lego League team, the Ancient Pickles, is encouraged to explore engineering beyond robotics and into meaningful community-based problem-solving.
This project didn’t just teach them structural design—it introduced them to real considerations like UV exposure, durability, weather resistance, and material lifespan. These are the same questions professional contractors, field engineers, and environmental specialists ask when choosing protective sheeting for shelters, equipment covers, and temporary structures.
Americover’s Commitment to Education, Innovation, and Hands-On Learning
This collaboration is a powerful reminder that specialty plastic sheeting isn’t just for contractors or industrial applications—it’s also a tool for learning, experimentation, and innovation. Seeing students use our materials to solve real-world challenges highlights why Americover remains passionate about supporting educational programs and community-based engineering initiatives.
As the Ancient Pickles prepare to present their geodesic dome concept to the Pennsylvania Archaeological Society, we’re excited to follow their progress and see how their prototype evolves. Their curiosity, creativity, and determination underscore exactly why material selection—and accessible product knowledge—matters.
At Americover, we believe in helping people build with trust and grow with confidence—whether you’re a contractor on a jobsite, a researcher in the field, or a student team bringing bold ideas to life. Projects like this one show what’s possible when innovation meets the right materials.
If you’re developing a prototype, conducting a case study, or exploring materials for a unique application, Americover is here to help.
Our team can recommend products, supply samples, and support you through every stage of your project.
