What Is ASFR6 Antistatic Fire Retardant Plastic Sheeting?
ASFR6 is a 6 mil polyethylene film engineered to do two jobs at once: resist flame and dissipate static. Americover developed it in 1993 for the telecommunications industry, where static discharge near sensitive electronics was as dangerous as fire itself.
Today it shows up wherever both risks live in the same room — data centers, hospital renovations, cleanrooms, and electronics manufacturing retrofits.
Most “6 mil poly” on the market handles neither problem. ASFR6 was built to handle both, and to prove it on paper when an inspector asks.

How It Works
ASFR6 fights two failure modes.
Static control. The film is formulated with antistatic additives that prevent charge buildup on the surface and let any static dissipate gradually instead of releasing in a sudden discharge. That matters anywhere a spark could damage equipment or ignite dust.
Flame resistance. The same film is engineered to resist flame propagation and limit flame spread, so a temporary barrier doesn’t become fuel during occupied-space work.
It also repels dust, which is why it doubles as a containment barrier in environments where air quality and equipment protection both matter.
Standards and Specifications
ASFR6 is tested to recognized national standards, and a fire certificate ships with every order. The film is printed with its rating in red so the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) can verify it in the field.
| Standard | What It Verifies |
|---|---|
| NFPA 701-15 (Test 1 & 2) | Flame propagation of films used in interior spaces |
| ASTM E84 Class A | Surface burning / flame spread — the rating many GCs and AHJs require above NFPA 701 |
| ANSI/EOS/ESD-S11.11 | Surface resistance — confirms the antistatic performance |
| UL 214 | Flammability of treated films and fabrics |
| TP 76300MP 1.2.7 Section B | Telecommunications industry compliance from the product’s original use |
A cleanroom version is available, and ASFR6 is offered as a Buy America (BABA) compliant option for government projects.
Where ASFR6 Gets Used
ASFR6 fits jobs where fire safety and static control share the same wall.
- Data centers — hot aisle / cold aisle containment, cable management areas, and finished IT space barriers where standard FR poly’s missing antistatic property is a problem.
- Hospital and healthcare renovation — temporary dust barriers in occupied facilities that still need to pass fire code.
- Electronics manufacturing and cleanrooms — containment where electrostatic discharge could damage product.
- Telecom retrofits — the product’s original application.
A Note for Architects and Specifiers
“Antistatic fire retardant plastic sheeting” is a product category. Any manufacturer can label a film that way. ASFR6 is Americover’s specific, tested product — and the testing is what passes inspection.
This category is widely produced overseas and by other manufacturers, often marketed as equivalent but not tested to Americover’s specifications. Generic “6 mil poly” language in a spec will not capture the performance you need, and it leaves the door open to a substitution that fails at AHJ review.
Americover sells ASFR6 only through approved channels. We do not list it on Amazon, eBay, or similar marketplaces, because those platforms dilute traceability and open the door to untested look-alikes.
Printing the standard directly on the film has long been the at-a-glance mark inspectors relied on to confirm performance on the job. That hasn’t changed — but counterfeits have made a printed line easier to copy. So Americover is adding layers of proof. Genuine product will soon carry the Americover logo on the film itself, alongside the printed rating.
The strongest confirmation, though, is on paper. To be sure you have authentic Americover material, ask for a Certificate of Conformance. Americover’s is issued on company letterhead and references the invoice number and the company that purchased it. If a supplier can’t produce one that matches, the material isn’t ours.
If you aren’t sure whether your supplier is an approved Americover source, contact us, and we’ll help you get the genuine product.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does ASFR6 stand for?
Anti-Static Fire Retardant, 6 mil. It’s a polyethylene film that resists flame and dissipates static in one material.
What standards does ASFR6 meet?
NFPA 701-15, ASTM E84 Class A, ANSI/EOS/ESD-S11.11, and UL 214. A fire certificate ships with every order.
Where is ASFR6 typically used?
Data centers, hospital and healthcare renovations, cleanrooms, electronics manufacturing, and telecom retrofits — anywhere fire safety and static control both matter.
Is ASFR6 sold on Amazon or eBay?
No. Americover sells ASFR6 only through approved channels to protect product traceability and prevent untested substitutes. Contact Americover to confirm an approved supplier.
How do I verify I have genuine ASFR6?
Genuine ASFR product is printed with its rating “Anti-Stat / Fire Retardant Passes NFPA 701-15 Test 1 & 2” in red and will soon carry the Americover logo on the film. The strongest check is a Certificate of Conformance — Americover’s comes on our company letterhead and references the invoice number and purchasing company. If unsure, contact us to confirm your supplier.
