For construction projects, the importance of dust containment cannot be overstated. Dust containment protects building residents and workers from the fine particles of dust that can cause dangerously adverse health conditions and increase the risk of property damage. As crucial as containment systems are, a dust containment system is only as good as the dust barrier plastic sheeting you use to create it.
As leading experienced professionals for over 30 years in industrial plastic sheeting for agricultural and construction applications, the team at Americover understands the importance of using a dust barrier that meets the needs of your project. “The key to finding the perfect solution is considering the unique needs of your construction project,” says Americover account manager Lisa Richards. “Understanding the requirements you have to meet, will guide you to the best options for that application.”

Four Things to Consider Before Purchasing Your Next Dust Barrier
If you’re wondering which plastic sheeting to use for your construction project, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. Below are four things to consider before you purchase your next dust barrier solution. If you need further guidance, check out our dust containment resource page.
Installation – What are the different ways to create a dust containment?
How you install your dust barrier depends on the area that you wish to quarantine. Options include installing with butyl tape or creating a curtained off area using pole systems such as the Zipwall or Trimaco’s pole system. The best dust barrier will be lightweight, making it easy to install and causing less strain on the pole system. 4 mil to 6 mil plastic sheeting is typically sufficient for these systems.

Performance – What’s the most durable dust barrier plastic?
Imagine the hustle and bustle of activity around the worksite. How might moving equipment and materials potentially lead to damage? Also, take into account how you plan to access the enclosure; for example, if you plan to use a zipper to create an entryway.
If durability is your primary concern in a dust containment system, we recommend a reinforced plastic sheeting solution. It is lightweight and easy to install yet strong enough to resist rips. For added strength, opt for 10 mil or 12 mil plastic sheeting, which offers increased resistance to punctures and tears than 4 mil and 6 mil plastic dust barriers.
Visibility –
Dust barriers come in a variety of colors, including white, black, white/black, and clear. If visibility is no concern, you may choose any color you wish. Black offers the least amount of visibility through the sheeting, while clear sheeting will offer the most amount of visibility.
Environment – Is your dust containment subject to safety compliance?
If your construction project is in an electrostatic-sensitive environment like a call center, data center, or healthcare setting, antistatic or fire retardant additives will be necessary for your dust containment system.
For construction projects where direct sunlight or exposure to the elements is a concern, UV-resistant plastic sheeting will ensure the barrier lasts the entire length of your project.
