Hurricane and tornado seasons bring wet weather in excess, causing many houses to become more susceptible to roof leaks in the upcoming months. As a roofing contractor, you may have a backlog of customers experiencing roof damage all at once but not enough resources to make the repairs right away. Tarping roofs can protect the house or building structure from further damage until you can repair it. In this blog, we’ll discuss what materials our customers use for protection against high winds, hail, and rain.
What to Tarp a Roof With Until it Can Be Repaired
Because roof leaks tend to spread and affect the entire structure, pinpointing the source of a leak can be difficult. Any roof is susceptible to leaking due to aging and wear-and-tear or poor construction. Other common causes for leaks include a buildup of debris or water due to gutter drainage issues. Assessing the damage and locating the source of the leak takes time, but when multiple clients are affected, that’s time you might not have. Here are some tips on what to use to tarp a roof until it can be repaired.
Choose the Best Plastic Sheeting Tarp
Plastic sheeting should at least be big enough to cover the damaged area, but it is best if the plastic sheeting covers the entire length of the roof. It should also be UV resistant so it doesn’t prematurely deteriorate. While blue tarps are readily available at your local retail store, it might be more effective to consider a roll of heavy-duty plastic sheeting. The thicker the tarp is the better your protection will be!
Here are some of the top solutions we offer to protect roofs.
String Reinforced Plastic Sheeting – The reinforcement provides better rip resistance in high wind areas; acts as wind barrier and vapor barrier. The following mil thicknesses provide premium weather and roof protection.
Heat Shrink Wrap Film is an excellent weather barrier that conforms to the shape of the roof and works well with all roof types. It’s essentially heat-welded to create a drum tight fit to the roof.
Black Fire Retardant Plastic Sheeting is great for short-term use where fire safety standards are a concern. It offers temporary UV resistance in a lightweight film.
